…But Almost No One Can Access It. What now?

Dear Pissed Off Peaches, reproductive justice family, and allies:

We’ve been preparing for this time, but it’s still incredibly tough. In June 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade; then on July 20, a federal court allowed Georgia’s early abortion ban (HB 481) to go into effect immediately. Abortion-rights advocates are now suing to stop the ban in state court, but for now, Georgians’ abortion access is tied up in the judicial process, and abortion is all but banned for the duration of the legal process. Right now, we might feel like everything is against us. Yet we are not alone — 70% of Georgians support abortion access! So we are not just going to defend abortion rights from further restriction, or even be content with solely reversing HB 481. We know the rights we have on paper have always been restricted in practice, not truly accessible, for so many people. #WeDeserveMore

Right-wing politicians try to divide us with economic exploitation and racist rhetoric, robbing our schools and services while leaving us to fight for crumbs. But Black, brown, and white Georgians alike deserve abundance, a world where we can all decide what is best for our own bodies, families, and futures. So that’s what we’re going to build.

Now is the time to repeal the dozens of unjust abortion laws in Georgia; to guarantee that no one will be imprisoned for a wanted abortion; and to pass policy changes that help us actually access abortions when we need them, free of bias or barriers, and start families and raise children on our own terms.

Take the next step RIGHT NOW to show up for abortion access + build reproductive justice in Georgia.

How Can I Support Abortion Access in Georgia?

What is the Current Status of Georgia’s 6-Week Ban?

On October 7, 2024, the Supreme Court of Georgia reimplemented the early abortion ban (HB 481) when it granted the State Attorney General’s request for a “stay” – an order to keep the ban in place while the current lawsuit against it proceeds through the court system. With the ban back in place, most Georgians, once again, can only get abortion care up until embryonic cardiac activity is detectable (normally around 6 weeks into pregnancy).

Previously on September 30, a lower court, the Fulton County Superior Court, had ruled to overturn the ban on the grounds that it violated pregnant people’s right to privacy, liberty, and equal protection under the law guaranteed by the Georgia constitution. However, the Attorney General filed to appeal that ruling with the Georgia Supreme Court, and also requested a stay of the ruling, which was granted on October 7. The ban will remain in place unless the Georgia Supreme Court’s final ruling declares that HB 481 cannot be enforced. The Georgia Supreme Court has not announced when it will issue a decision.
